Choosing a packaging format

When drums are the right choice, and when they are not

Drums suit some projects better than others. Tiger Bitumen also supplies bitumen in 1 MT jumbo bags, so we can recommend the format that fits your site, volume and unloading equipment.

Consideration Steel drums 1 MT jumbo bags Bulk (tanker / vessel)
Unit size 150 kg 180 kg per drum 1,000 kg per PP woven bag in a steel cage Full tanker or vessel parcels
Receiving equipment Forklift or manual drum handling; no heated storage tank required Forklift or crane for 1 MT units Heated import terminal and heated storage
Suits Smaller or phased volumes, remote or inland sites, distributors reselling by the drum Medium volumes where sites can handle 1 MT units Large, continuous consumption near a bitumen terminal
Trade-offs Packaging adds weight and cost per tonne; drums must be heated and opened before use; empty drums need disposal or reuse Bag and cage must be cut and handled; heating equipment needed on site Needs heated logistics end to end; not practical for small or remote projects

Considering bags instead? See Tiger Bitumen’s jumbo bag packaging.
